Previn’s Problems

An open letter to the L.A. Philharmonic’s Ernest Fleischmann:
Regarding the “What’s Next” article in the May 24 Calendar, and in the wake of the conductors “musical chairs” hoopla, I admit at first I was confused about why we were losing Andre Previn as our music director. Then after carefully reviewing the circumstances, it all became clear.
-- First, what we had was a director who was not very controversial or flamboyant in his conducting or his personal life style.
-- He refused to express the basic “prima donna” complex and display the essential skill of berating those he worked with.
-- And, finally, he seemed to be unappreciated by a public that likes fine arts such as “Sugar Babies” and “Cats.”
Yes, Mr. Previn’s biggest failure was that he could only conduct masterfully .
Regarding possible replacements:
-- I don’t think Herbert von Karajan could be intimidated into taking orders.
-- Mort Downey Jr. has undeniable charisma and following, but I don’t feel he’s as yet fully musically matured.
-- Harpo is dead.
