Soviets Battle Blaze on Oil Rig in Caspian Sea

MOSCOW — Soviet fireboats have been trying for four days to put out a fire on a Caspian Sea oil platform, which was rocked by a series of explosions that sent flames 80 feet into the air, Pravda reported Friday.
A fireboat rescued all 24 workers aboard the deep-water platform when it exploded about 100 miles from Baku, the capital of the southwestern republic of Azerbaijan, the newspaper said.
Part of the metal structure fell into the sea after the second of three blasts on the No. 2 platform in the oil field called “April 28,” Pravda said.
It did not say when the fire started.
