Acar went over the side of the Simi Valley Freeway and struck a signpost Sunday in Chatsworth, critically injuring two teen-agers.
Jane Cheun and Erica Squire, of Granada Hills, both 16, were trapped in the car for almost half an hour while firefighters used a hydraulic rescue device to free them, said Jim Wells, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.
The girls were airlifted to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where a hospital spokeswoman said they were in critical condition.
The accident occurred about 2 p.m. as the car was eastbound on the freeway near the De Soto Avenue off-ramp, Wells said. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
