Chile’s Gen. Augusto Pinochet warned that as head of the army, he will not subordinate himself to the civilian who will succeed him as president next year. Pinochet, 73, who assumed the presidency after a coup in 1973, said there will be no “cohabitation” with a civilian president. “I am not going to be subordinating myself to him. I am going to subordinate myself to the country,” he told reporters. Pinochet must leave the presidency next year but can remain as army commander under the 1980 constitution. Voters last year turned down his request to remain as president. His successor will be elected in December.
