President Bush’s self-styled “restrained response” to the flagrantly unrestrained human rights violations perpetrated against student demonstrators in Beijing seems supremely ironic in light of his attitudes toward situations of conflict in other parts of the world. It is tragic that when American ideals come into conflict with American economic and military interests it is, increasingly, our ideals which are sacrificed.
