CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia’s treasurer resigned under fire today, averting an impeachment trial on charges he bungled an investment fund.
The move preserves A. James Manchin’s $2,000-a-month pension, which he would have lost if convicted by the state Senate next month.
The flamboyant Democrat, who was crying when he resigned, was impeached by the House in March on 17 counts blaming him for an estimated $279-million loss from an investment fund.
