Caped Crusader Keeps Flying

“Batman” added another record to its box office string, becoming the first movie to hit the $100-million mark in just 10 days. The movie took in another $30.1 million during its second weekend to dwarf the competition. Disney’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” continued its fast pace, with a second weekend gross of $13.1 million, and Columbia’s “The Karate Kid Part III” did an estimated $10.4 million. Some of the weekend figures are estimated here because much of the film industry took July 4 Eve off. Orion Pictures’ “Great Balls of Fire” opened to a very disappointing weekend gross of $3.8 million in 1,417 theaters, a per screen average of about $2,700.

* Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” benefited from a month of controversy and opened strong across the country, taking in $3.6 million from just 352 theaters, for a hefty $10,095 per screen average.
