Madera County Jail Correctional officers have broken the law by carrying firearms and strip-searching inmates, Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp has concluded. In an opinion released Friday, Van de Kamp said corrections officers cannot use tear gas, search inmates or carry guns without the sheriff’s permission. Madera Corrections Director Al Hahn denied that his officers use tear gas, and said that they only carry guns when transporting prisoners.
