Japan Looks to Speed Up Commuter Trains

TOKYO — The Transport Ministry said it will study ways to increase the speed and frequency of commuter trains to ease the burden of travelers suffering from long trip times and congestion.
Ministry officials said plans call for boosting the speed of commuter trains to 99 miles per hour from the current 62 m.p.h.
The fastest commuter train introduced by the East Japan Railway Co. this spring runs at 80.78 m.p.h.
Super-express “bullet trains” run at 162 m.p.h.
