SEOUL — A Chinese army major and his wife who defected to South Korea through the border truce village of Panmunjom have left Seoul for the United States, the Foreign Ministry announced Monday.
Maj. Zuo Xiukai, 40, and his wife left Sunday.
South Korean authorities had been in contact with U.S. officials concerning the couple’s resettlement in the United States, the Foreign Ministry said.
Zuo, a member of the Chinese delegation to the Korean Military Armistice Commission, and his wife defected July 29.
China has demanded the unconditional return of the defectors, but South Korea has no obligation under international law to comply with the request.
