SOUTHLAND : Hearing in Actress’ Slaying Delayed

The attorney for the man accused of murdering actress Rebecca Schaeffer won postponement of his arraignment today, alleging that he was illegally snatched from an Arizona jail by Los Angeles authorities.
Deputy Public Defender Stephen Galindo filed a motion asking Municipal Judge David Horwitz to dismiss the murder charge and return Robert John Bardo to Tucson, where his attorney was planning to fight extradition.
Los Angeles authorities flew him to California on July 19 after his attorney inadvertently filed a motion in the wrong court. Bardo, 19, has been described by authorities as an obsessed fan of Schaeffer, 21, who starred in the TV series “My Sister Sam.” They allege that he is the man who went to her apartment house July 18 and shot her when she went to the door.
Bardo’s Tucson attorney, Deputy Public Defender Lori Lefferts, has angrily denounced Los Angeles authorities for spiriting Bardo out of Arizona before he could have an extradition hearing. She had planned to argue that he was mentally incompetent and should not be extradited.
