South Korean riot police fought running battles with student radicals demanding the release of dissident student Im Su Kyong, who was detained two weeks ago after illegally visiting North Korea. State radio said anti-government rallies erupted in at least 27 universities in Seoul, Kwangju and other cities. At Seoul’s Sungkyunkwan University, about 700 students threw firebombs and rocks at police. In Kwangju, riot police used tear gas to disperse about 3,000 protesters.
