South Gate : Senior Citizens May Qualify for 50% Cut in Trash Rates

Many low- and moderate-income senior citizens are eligible for a 50% discount on trash collection rates.
Residents over the age of 62 can cut their monthly trash pickup bills of $10.40 in half if they meet eligibility requirements under the program that started Aug. 1, said South Gate city spokeswoman Maureen O’Connor.
To be eligible, the resident must not earn more than $21,300 a year if living alone or $24,300 for two-person households. Qualifying residents must have water service in their name and live at the address. O’Connor said an estimated 13% of the city’s 79,100 residents are over 62.
Applications are available through Nov. 1 at the billing section of the Water Department in City Hall, 8650 California Ave. They can also be mailed out by calling (213) 563-9526.
“Also, hopefully, we’ll be doing a similar thing with the water rates, but that hasn’t been approved yet,” O’Connor said.
