The Rev. William L. McKinn, 45, whose portrayal of Mark Twain in churches and on college campuses throughout the country made him a national figure. A minister of the United Church of Christ, McLinn operated the Mark Twain Social Issues Programs in Washington while also serving as associate minister of the La Mesa (Calif.) United Church of Christ. The church came to consider him a missionary after he was first seen performing Twain’s material in 1975 while still a student at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. He started touring with “Mark Twain on the Issues of the ‘80s” in 1980 and for most of this decade adapted Twain’s words to current political topics while dressed as the author. He also toured with his one-man show in Japan, Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China and had an audience with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. In Phoenix on Monday of AIDS-related complications.
