Hurricane Forces USAir and Amtrak to Interrupt Service

WASHINGTON — USAir and Amtrak suffered serious disruptions in passenger service Friday as a result of Hurricane Hugo’s sweep through the Carolinas.
The airline was forced to cancel 300 flights at its major hub in Charlotte, N.C., causing the cancellation of an additional 200 flights at connections elsewhere.
“There was a domino effect throughout the system. We took a pretty good beating,” USAir spokesman Dave Shipley said.
Although Hugo’s winds caused extensive damage at the Charlotte airport Friday morning, USAir was able to resume normal operations later in the day, Shipley said. The airline operates 3,000 flights daily.
Other airlines reported fewer cancellations.
