WORLD : Shevardnadze Will Visit Nicaragua

MOSCOW — Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze will go to Nicaragua in early October, the official Soviet press agency Tass said today.
The exact date of the “working visit” was not announced but the trip is expected to be watched carefully by U.S. diplomats who view it as a key test of the sincerity of Soviet promises to try to settle regional conflicts abroad. The Soviet Union has supported Nicaragua’s Marxist-Leninist Sandinista government in its conflict with the U.S.-backed Contra rebels.
