Oprah Winfrey’s visit to Charleston, S.C., last week has prompted a storm of contributions to aid victims of Hurricane Hugo. More than $1 million dollars in credit-card donations alone poured in within the first 24 hours after the broadcast. Check donations mailed in have not yet been tallied and are expected to match the credit-card pledges. An American Red Cross official called the response “the quickest from individuals that we have ever seen in a fund-raising effort.”
