Candidate Announces Bid to Replace Lukens

United Press International

Republican state Rep. John Boehner declared his candidacy Monday for the seat held by Rep. Donald E. (Buz) Lukens (R-Ohio), calling the congressman’s sex-related conviction a tragedy that leaves voters feeling betrayed.

Boehner was the first politician to announce his intention to seek election to the seat in 1990.

Lukens is appealing his May conviction on a charge of having sex with a teen-age girl, and he has rejected demands by Republican Party leaders that he resign.
