Newbury Park 10, Camarillo 0--One play broke Camarillo’s back as host Newbury Park (4-1-2, 2-0-1) remained undefeated in league play.
With 5:52 to play in the third quarter of a scoreless tie, Newbury Park quarterback Jai Johnston handed off to junior tailback Walter Thomas, who swept right, then handed off to Brian Smith on a reverse. Smith lateraled back to Johnston, who launched a 54-yard bomb to a wide-open Shane Gallimore for the game’s only touchdown.
Camarillo (2-5, 1-3) controlled the ball in the first half, allowing Newbury Park just three possessions, 14 plays and 37 total yards. Camarillo ran 33 plays in the half.
Newbury Park kicker Brad Hanson booted a 32-yard field goal with 1:02 remaining after teammates Jeff Jay and Joe Smigiel stopped Camarillo running back Tim Cornish on fourth down at the Camarillo 15-yard line.
Camarillo outgained Newbury Park, 204 yards to 156.
