WORLD : France Unafraid of One Germany

BONN — French President Francois Mitterrand, ending talks here with West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl today, said he is not afraid of a reunified Germany.
Speaking to reporters after a two-day meeting that concentrated on the rapid changes under way in Eastern Europe, Mitterrand described the question of German reunification as a dominant issue in Europe at the end of the century.
“I am not afraid of reunification,” Mitterrand said. “I think the desire for reunification is legitimate for the Germans. What counts above all is the determination and will of the people.”
Asked when he thought there would be real self-determination for people in both German states, Mitterrand said he would be surprised if there was not some movement in the next 10 years.
