Tulane University applied to become a member again of the Southeastern Conference. The school dropped out of the conference 23 years ago.

“It is now difficult to be as effective as an independent,” Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk said. “The days are gone, with the rare exception, where an independent can really compete in the television market.
