Countywide : Builders Start Work on Homeless Project

Kicking off Homeless Awareness Week, a builders’ group Monday launched a program to provide new and renovated housing for Orange County’s homeless.
Workers began renovating the first of five structures in the HomeAid program, run by the Orange County Building Industry Assn., which solicits financial contributions and donations of labor and materials.
The work will transform a run-down, low-rent apartment complex in the 12000 block of Keel Avenue in Garden Grove into a shelter for 20 persons.
The project will force 86 current tenants to move. The city of Garden Grove is providing relocation assistance, in either lump sums or rent subsidies, to those who are displaced.
Program funds are used to provide not only housing facilities but food, clothing, counseling and other services for those who need shelter for up to three months.
Other Orange County facilities scheduled for renovation starting this week include the Interval House, Midway City; Fullerton Interfaith/New Vista Shelter, Fulllerton; El Modena House, El Modena, and the Anchor House in San Clemente.
