Zimbabwe Sculptor John Takawira, 51

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Sculptor John Takawira, who carved folklore into stone, died after a long illness, it was announced Saturday. He was 51.
The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, where Takawira’s carvings were often displayed, said he died Wednesday and will be buried next week.
The Vukutu Art Foundation, where Takawira often worked, said he was born in the rural town of Chegutu (formerly Hartley) near Harare in 1938 and learned his craft from other artists in the 1960s.
Takawira’s subjects were drawn mainly from traditional folklore.
