ON THE SIDELINES : Malibu Man Wins U.S. Biathlon

NEW YORK — Brad Kearns of Malibu won the United States Biathlon Federation Championship in 1 hour, 14 minutes, 50 seconds at Central Park.
Russ Jones, of Collingswood, N.J., was second in 1:16:23, followed by Bernard McGarry of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., in 1:17:05.
Joy Hanson of West Chester, Pa., competing in her first biathlon ever, was the women’s winner Sunday in 1:22:27. Shani Rogers of Los Altos Hills, Calif., followed in 1:24:42, and Sally Grand of Plymouth, N.H. was third in 1:25:27.
A field of 505 competed in the biathlon, which started with a three-mile run, then featured an 18-mile bicycle race and closed with another three-mile run.
