Peru’s Ruling Party Rebuffed by Voters

LIMA, Peru — The governing party of Peruvian President Alan Garcia suffered a significant blow in nationwide municipal elections, losing the Lima mayorship to an independent candidate, according to unofficial projections released Monday.
Reformist and TV executive Ricardo Belmont, 44, was projected to win in the capital, where 30% of the nation’s population lives. A center-right coalition, the Democratic Front, led by presidential candidate Mario Vargas Llosa, was projected to win most of the 1,769 mayoral posts.
Garcia’s center-left American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA) has lost support because of crippling inflation and violence by Maoist guerrillas.
