Fire Erupts in Storeroom of Docked Cruise Ship

Fire broke out Thursday aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines ship berthed at Los Angeles Harbor, damaging a storeroom and some gift store merchandise, officials said. Only a skeleton crew was on board, and no one was hurt.
The 8:58 a.m. fire aboard the Tropicale was extinguished by about 55 firefighters in 35 minutes after erupting in a 20-by-20-foot storage room at the stern of the ship, City Fire Department spokesman Greg Acevedo said.
The ship, based in Los Angeles since 1982 and used for cruises to Mexico, was undergoing refurbishing before reassignment next month to Puerto Rico.
