PACIFIC 10 CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : New Starters Lead Washington to Win

New Washington starters Doug Meekins and Brent Merritt scored 18 points each as the Huskies raced to an early lead and defeated Stanford, 71-59, Thursday night in a Pacific 10 Conference basketball game at Seattle.
Meekins, a sophomore forward making his second collegiate start, scored the first four points of the game, sparking a 6-0 run for the Huskies (7-6, 2-3).
Merritt, a junior transfer in his first starting role at Washington, scored 10 points in the second half. Adam Keefe scored 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half for Stanford (9-3, 1-2).
California 72, Washington State 67--Bryant Walton scored all 12 of his points in the second half and Brian Hendrick scored a career-high 23 points as the Golden Bears held on in Pullman, Wash.
Cal is 11-4 overall, 2-2 in the Pac-10. Washington State (7-8, 1-4) lost its fourth in a row.
