Program Pays Death Benefits to Terminally Ill: Prudential Insurance Co. of America’s new plan allows terminally ill policyholders and those permanently confined to nursing homes to tap into death benefits while they are still alive. Prudential’s new “living needs benefit program,” to be announced today, is the first mass market plan in the nation to allow life insurance policyholders access to their death benefits before they die. It will be available initially to policyholders in 10 states that have already approved the program. California is not among them.
