CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SUNNYVALE : Strict Law on Toxic Gas OKd

A new law passed unanimously by the Sunnyvale City Council establishes strict regulations for users of toxic gases. Supporters called it a model ordinance for communities where semiconductor chips are manufactured. The law--designed to avoid a major release of toxic gases during an earthquake, fire or accident--requires firms to have 24-hour monitoring, seismic shut-off valves and storage facilities, and piping to control gases in the event of a leak. The law also covers chlorine storage and so will apply to swimming pool owners as well as industrial users.
