CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : State Overtime Pay Withheld, Suit Says

An employees group has sued the state to recover allegedly unpaid overtime compensation they say could affect 43,000 workers and total $20 million. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento, accuses the state Department of Personnel Administration of violating the Fair Labor Standards Act by exempting thousands of employees from overtime on grounds they were administrators, executives and professionals. The 6,000-member California Union of Safety Employees contends that employees were required to work more than 40 hours a week and denied time-and-a-half pay for the additional hours.
