COLLEGE ROUNDUP : St. Mary’s Stops UC Irvine in Baseball

Gil Orta went two for three with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead St. Mary’s to a 7-4 victory over host UC Irvine in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday.
Orta had a two-run single to key St. Mary’s three-run second inning and Randy Cooper and Mike Zanski had run-scoring singles in the seventh inning to lead St. Mary’s (1-2). Cooper went three for five with two RBIs.
Osmar DeChavez went two for four with one run scored and Brian Young homered in the fifth for host UC Irvine (2-3).
Tom Shildemeyer was the winning pitcher and Bill Christ had the save. David Bladow (1-1) took the loss.
In another nonconference game:
Southern California College 6, UC San Diego 1--Centerfielder Paul Plyler drove in two runs and scored a third for SCC (2-0). Three pitchers combined for a two-hitter, with starter Ralph Garcia pitching five innings for the victory.
In nonconference men’s volleyball:
Pepperdine 3, UC Irvine 1--James Felton had 17 kills and six digs, but it wasn’t enough as Pepperdine defeated host UC Irvine, 15-10, 15-3, 11-15, 15-10, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match.
