Grand Illusion Ahead of Fleet

Skipper Ed McDowell’s Grand Illusion was leading the fleet toward a record finish in the San Diego-to-Manzanillo race Thursday night, riding winds unusually strong for a Mexican race.
Ultralight displacement boats from the IOR-70 class held the first 10 positions, and all 10 were projected to finish in from 125 to 132 hours, well below the record of 144 hours.
A 35-knot wind that carried the leaders 300 miles in 24 hours last weekend boosted them well ahead of a record pace. Late Thursday they were still making speeds of 12 to 15 knots in 25-knot wind.
