President Bush did the honors during a White House TV special honoring literacy teachers and adults who learned to read late in life. The East Room of the White House was transformed into a studio for the taping of the National Literacy Honors Gala. Bush and his wife, Barbara, a longtime crusader on behalf of literacy causes, presented awards to three literacy teachers and three adult learners. “Literacy is critical to our very future . . . essential to our freedom,” Bush said.
