Fire Rips Savoy Theater: London’s historic Savoy Theater, opened more than a century ago to feature the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, was in ruins Monday after flames fueled by high winds ravaged its interior. The cause of the fire, which hit while the theater was dark, is under investigation. The blaze was controlled about two hours after it began by 10 fire trucks and more than 100 firefighters. About 130 guests from the adjoining Savoy Hotel, including actor Richard Harris, were evacuated. The hotel was not damaged. The current show at the 1,123-seat Savoy is “It’s Magic,” starring magician Paul Daniels.
