MANILA — Three suspected members of a Communist death squad shot and killed the mayor of a town just outside Manila today, the military reported.
Mayor Felino Maquinay of Carmona died on the spot with three bullet wounds in the head, said Capt. Romeo Gullas, provincial operations chief of the Philippine Constabulary.
Three unidentified youths, believed to be members of the Communist New People’s Army, approached Maquinay as he was having lunch and opened fire at close range with pistols, Gullas said.
Maquinay’s bodyguard and his driver, too surprised by the attack to protect him, were unharmed, Gullas added. The gunmen fled in a commandeered car.
