Capistrano Valley 96, Corona 72--The Cougars used a dominating third quarter to defeat visiting Corona.
The Cougars (18-8), the county’s second-ranked team, could not shake Corona (15-9) in the first half. Corona trailed by just six points, 47-41, at halftime.
But in the third quarter, the Cougars outscored Corona, 28-11, to take a 75-52 lead.
Capistrano Valley was led by forward Scott McCorkle and guard Chris Kostoff. McCorkle led all scorers with 33 points, and Kostoff had 27 points, including six three-pointers.
The Cougars, led by center Eric Gruenewald’s game-high 12 rebounds, also dominated the boards, 49-24.
“Our kids took Corona a bit lightly,” Capistrano Valley Coach Mark Thornton said. “We didn’t play much defense in that first half. There’s no way we should’ve given up 41 points in a half like that. Obviously we played much better defensively in the second half.”
