COSTA MESA : Smoking Banned at Coast Colleges
- Share via
The Coast Community College District Board of Trustees has adopted a districtwide policy banning smoking in all facilities.
Smoking indoors had been allowed in designated areas on each of the district’s campuses, which includes Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Golden West College in Huntington Beach and Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley. The ban also applies to KOCE-TV in Huntington Beach and the district office in Costa Mesa.
Dr. John Renley, vice chancellor of human resources and chairman of the District Wellness Committee, said information on the negative effects of smoking and secondary smoke persuaded the district to adopt a stricter policy.
“The individual campuses had already adopted various policies that restricted smoking, and we wanted a stricter and more uniform policy that applied to all campuses and facilities,” he said.
The district plans to assist employees and students who wish to stop smoking through programs offered at campus health centers.
