STRAIGHT JACKET

Re Dave Light’s letter wondering whether the photo accompanying “Bernard Shaw on Photography” (Book Review, Dec. 31) may have been “ ‘flipped’ in printing” (since Shaw looks through his camera’s view finder with his left eye but pushes the shutter button with a finger of his right hand):
Probably not. Check the buttons on his jacket.
Many photographers in industry have learned to look for such “handedness” clues to catch unwarranted flopped negatives.
A man’s buttons, as Shaw’s, are on the right of the garment. I checked the jackets in my own closet. (Not my wife’s.)
