Pirmin Zurbriggen went into retirement in storybook fashion, winning a record-equaling fourth World Cup overall title in his final race over home ground at Veysonnaz, Switzerland.
While West Germany’s Armin Bittner clinched a second consecutive slalom title, Zurbriggen earned a spot in the skiing’s record books alongside Gustav Thoeni of Italy, the only other man to win four overall titles.
Bittner had a two-heat time of 1 minute 33.81 seconds over the tricky “Bear” course for his fourth slalom victory of the season.
Zurbriggen has 312 overall points, 92 ahead of Ole-Kristian Furuseth. Zurbriggen won the overall in 1984, 1987 and 1988.
