EL PASO — The University of Texas-El Paso said today it will abide by NCAA limitations placed on its new assistant football coach, Charlie Bailey, who was cited by the NCAA for violations when he was head coach at Memphis State.
“We’ve received notification from the NCAA infractions committee, and we will abide by the limitations placed on Coach Bailey’s duties,” said UTEP head football Coach David Lee.
Bailey resigned from Memphis State last May after three years there, acknowledging that he had made a mistake concerning a student athlete’s summer employment. The NCAA found that a Memphis State football player had been overpaid in a summer job with a booster and had been told by Bailey to lie about it. Memphis State was placed on three years’ probation and forbidden to recruit off campus this year.
Lee said Bailey would be barred from any recruiting responsibilities at UTEP for a year.
