Movie theater chains bring with them their industry competitions when they come south to Orange County. Edwards Cinemas currently has the biggest presence here, with 30 theaters and 105 screens. United Artists lags far behind with seven theaters and 36 screens. AMC Entertainment maintains a certain competitive edge with four theaters and 24 screens. Mann manifests the theory that less is more with two theaters and 12 screens.
What movie executives share is an unwillingness to divulge pending plans for construction or even the number of seats in existing theaters. “We don’t publicize until we’re ready to move on it,” said United Artists spokesman Richard Naiffy. Edwards’ Blayden Thompson did disclose that a new Edwards theater will open in July at the Tustin Marketplace.
