A car bomb exploded in a marketplace a few yards from a Syrian army checkpoint in Muslim West Beirut, wounding 20 people, police said. The blast in the crowded Barbir marketplace sent shrapnel flying and ripped through a nearby sandbagged Syrian position. The explosion came amid renewed inter-Christian fighting in the eastern sector of the city.
