Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Suspect in Pentagon Probe Pleads Guilty

A former Unisys Corp. employee under investigation in the Pentagon procurement scandal of the 1980s pleaded guilty to a felony count of filing a false income tax return. Frederick J. Carville of New Hartford, N.Y., entered the plea before U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton in Alexandria, Va. He could be sentenced to up to three years in prison and fined $100,000. The plea resulted from negotiations between the U.S. attorney’s office and Carville’s attorney, said Michael Costello, who heads the Washington field office of the Defense Department’s criminal investigative service. The case stemmed from Operation Ill Wind, which concerned allegations that defense contractors bribed Pentagon officials to obtain inside information that would give them an advantage in obtaining contracts.
