Senior pitcher David Giatti of Poly High will be lost for the season after surgery today on his left ankle, broken in two places during Monday’s 11-10 win over San Fernando in a Holt-Goodman tournament semifinal game at Poly.
Giatti turned the ankle fielding a ground ball on the mound and was in a cast in the Poly dugout Tuesday during the Parrots’ 7-6 loss to Birmingham in the tournament final.
Giatti, the team’s top reliever, leads the team with two saves. He had a 1-2 record through 21 1/3 innings and a 3.84 earned-run average. Last season Giatti, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander, led Valley-area City Section pitchers with a 1.22 ERA and a 6-0 record.
Poly Coach Jerry Cord said relievers Raul Torres, a 5-11 junior, and Adolfo Rocha, a 5-9 junior, will be promoted to the top relief spots.
Torres is 1-1 and Rocha 1-0 for Poly (14-3, 9-0 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play).
