California IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : Officials to Seek Tougher Water Cuts

San Francisco officials will recommend mandatory cuts in water use next week as a result of the drought, which has left the city’s Hetch Hetchy reservoir with only 38% of its normal water supply. If the cuts are ordered by the city’s Public Utilities Commission, which will consider them on April 24, it will be the second time in three years that San Francisco residents have been forced to reduce their water use. In 1988, the city banned hosing of sidewalks and patios and ordered all water users to cut their consumption by 25%.
