Back Bay Park

Although we deeply appreciate the compliment by Estelle O. Webb (Times, March 18) suggesting that the park adjacent to Upper Newport Bay be named for us, we think it should be named Back Bay Regional Park. The upper bay always has been called “back bay.” It is a term of endearment.
Our greatest joy is the thanks we have had from children, such as those in Circle View School, who wrote that, if the estuary were to be threatened when they were grown up, they would fight as we have done to save it. Meanwhile, they said, explaining that they’re only 10 years old, they will pick up trash and never do anything to harm the estuary. With children like that, we have faith that the back bay will be protected forever.
