A former security guard at the downtown San Diego County courthouse has pleaded guilty to murdering a homeless mother who came to the courthouse for help. Kevin Kulo, 31, entered his guilty plea to second-degree murder in the Jan. 7 slaying of Mary Jo Zavala, 34, which prosecutors believe occurred in Kulo’s trailer in suburban El Cajon. Kulo also pleaded guilty to molesting the dead woman’s two daughters, ages 10 and 5, who apparently witnessed their mother’s murder. Kulo faces a maximum sentence of 31 years to life in state prison. Sentencing was set for June 1.
