NATION : Strike Shuts Many Okla. Schools

OKLAHOMA CITY — Scores of Oklahoma schools closed today in response to a call for a weeklong teachers walkout to protest the Legislature’s apparent rejection of a $230-million tax and education bill.
Oklahoma Education Assn. President Kyle Dahlem said more than 3,000 teachers had committed themselves to withhold services. Many of them demonstrated at the state Capitol, where legislators resumed efforts to reach a compromise, and others demonstrated in their home districts.
School officials canceled classes for one to five days in about 90 districts, including Tulsa, the state’s largest.
