Concessions From School Unions Sought by Britton

Supt. Leonard Britton has asked the board of the Los Angeles Unified School District to propose reopening negotiations with employee unions to seek financial concessions to help the district balance its budget.

The district, which spends about 85% of its general fund on employee salaries and benefits, needs to trim $200 million from its 1990-91 budget.

Britton’s motion asks that employees--including teachers, school police, classroom aides, office workers and craftsmen--renegotiate such items as paid sabbaticals, paid holidays and suspension of the district’s employee counseling program.

The board is scheduled to vote on the motion May 7.
