SAN DIEGO — Roman Catholic Bishop Leo T. Maher, who attracted national attention when he banned a pro-choice political candidate from receiving Communion, underwent brain surgery today to determine the nature of a brain lesion.
Maher, 74, checked into Scripps Clinic in La Jolla on Monday afternoon for testing on the advice of his personal physician, who became concerned over Maher’s symptoms of lethargy and loss of balance, the Diocese of San Diego said in a statement.
“Over the past several weeks, Bishop Leo T. Maher . . . has grown increasingly aware of a lack of physical strength and at times has demonstrated a loss of equilibrium,” the statement said.
Tests results revealed the presence of the brain lesion, a spokeswoman for the Scripps Clinic said.
